May-July 2009

published by Simon on 19 July 2009 - 3:02pm

Been ages since we sent an update, and obviously each week that we leave it longer to send an update makes the task even more daunting. So we decided to skip a whole 19 months of stuff since the last update - for now - and just write about what we've been up to recently. We'll try and get around to filling in the gap eventually :) More importantly, we'll make a serious effort to send out new updates every month!

One of the things we got up to not too long ago was involvement in some work for a good cause. Simon's work - Elastic Path Software - was involved in the Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay, which is an event that challenges groups of people to run or walk Relay-style for 24 hours. Teams of runners and/or walkers made up of corporate and recreational groups collect individual pledges or organize team fundraising events to raise money towards their collective team totals. The 24 Hour Relay is an annual project of the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities to raise funds for the BC Lions Society's Easter Seals camping program.

On the 30th May, we both joined a bunch of other people from Simon's work at a fund raising car wash. It was tiring work but we managed to raise $657. Here's a picture:

On June 20th & 21st, Simon joined his coworkers in participating in the relay itself. He walked/jogged 8km from 11pm to midnight and then another 4km from 5am to 6am. A big thanks to those who sponsored Simon, he raised over $500! His company managed to raise over $10000 which put them as the 8th highest fundraiser overall, and number 1 in the Technology Company category!

Sharon has been rather busy at work lately. Seems her Head Office have figured out how clever she is, and now they are asking her to train new managers AND go fix up problems with another store. There's been a few long days and working weekends for Sharon lately.

On a more casual note, we have been enjoying our new BBQ which lives on our balcony. We BBQ several times a week, cooking a selection of tasty meats accompanied either by vegetables done on the BBQ (especially corn on the cob) or salad (not done on the BBQ). Here's a picture of Simon enjoying some BBQ action.

We finally found a nearby Pub Trivia quiz which we have been going to every Wednesday night along with some friends and coworkers. Funnily enough it is run by two Aussies. It is a load of fun and we have won every night except for one - they had a special Canada Day edition which was all Canadian questions - the one week that we didn't have any Canadians on our team!

There's a cinema in town that has been showing some great "fan favourites" movies from the 80's and 90's once a month. So far we've seen The Matrix, Robocop, Terminator 2 and Ghostbusters 1 & 2 (double feature). At the end of the month they are showing Aliens. It is a fun evening and they normally give away some prizes in a raffle and to people that can answer trivia questions about the movie before it screens.

Last week we played a practical joke on our friend Ivan who works with Simon. He was away on vacation for a few weeks so, along with another couple of people from Simon's work, we wrapped everything on and around his desk in cling wrap, foil and xmas wrap. Here's a picture (click on it to see some more):

Speaking of Simon's work, for those that haven't already seen it there is a short humourous video about what it is like to work at Elastic Path, and Simon wrote the script for it! You can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1x_LTrdmHw

Our cats are both well, here's a couple of recent pictures of Bosley and Mikeneko:

Summer weather here has been reasonable up until the past few days. On Friday it hit 31.0C at YVR which broke the old record of 30.0C set in 1941 for the hottest July 17th on record! The forecast for the next week is a continuation of this heat wave.
